Home remedies for dandruff are an important arsenal in the fight against this frustrating condition. And here are two natural dandruff remedies that belong at the top of the list...
Home Remedy for Dandruff Number 1: Rectify Essential Fatty Acid Deficiencies.
Dandruff is basically a type of dermatitis and is closely related to the skin condition psoriasis. It can be caused by a dry scalp, but most people who suffer with dandruff actually have oily scalps (they usually also have oily skin and suffer from acne).
Supplementing with omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFA’s) is one of the natural dandruff remedies you must use. In fact, you will be wasting your time trying to get rid of this condition permanently without supplementing with these important nutrients! The omega-6 EFA gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) helps the body produce hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which help to calm overactive oil glands (one of the causes of dandruff). Omega-3 EFA’s also help to prevent inflammation and dry skin type disorders like dermatitis, psoriasis, and of course, dandruff.
The best source of omega-6, especially gamma-linolenic acid is evening primrose oil. This oil has been valued for centuries and works amazingly well. You need to take at least six 1000 mg capsules a day (6000 mg) in divided amounts to get good results.
For omega-3 supplementation you can take green-lipped mussels or krill oil if you choose. However, the cheapest source of omega-3 is still good old fashioned fish oil. You do need to be aware of contamination though (especially mercury contamination) so make sure the supplement company you buy from is reputable. You also need to take at least six to eight 1000 mg capsules of fish oil (6000-8000 mg) every day in divided doses for real results.
So yes, by taking the fish oil with the evening primrose oil that’s a minimum total of twelve capsules per day - which may seem like a lot to some people. But remember this… the number one reason why most people don’t get decent results when they supplement is they simply don’t take enough. The truth is you can’t overdose on evening primrose oil or fish oil, the same as you can’t overdose on eating fish or evening primrose… even if you eat tons of the stuff every day! (In today’s world of nutrient dead - chemically altered foods - we all really need to be much more concerned with underdosing rather than overdosing when it comes to taking supplements).
And for a final “extra shot” of EFA’s, you can buy chia seeds or a ground up linseed (flaxseed), sunflower and almond mix from your local supermarket or health food store and use this to sprinkle on your cereals and salads every day. It tastes good and compliments the fish oil and evening primrose oil really well.
Home Remedy for Dandruff Number 2: Kill Off All Yeast Fungus In The Body.
Yeast fungus is a nasty and potentially deadly substance. If allowed, it will grow and thrive in the body releasing toxic chemicals into the blood stream. Candida albicans are the most common type of fungus (thrush) but there are others.
A yeast type of organism known as pityrosporum-ovle (malassezia) resides on the scalp of every person. With people that suffer from dandruff, these organisms multiply out of control. There are various theories as to why this occurs for dandruff sufferers, but one of the natural dandruff remedies we strongly recommend is that you kill off all yeast fungus in the body. Because malassezia is a yeast organism, it makes sense that it could easily be controlled in the same way as you control other yeast fungus such as candida albicans. We need to point out though that this is just a theory and has yet to be proven. However, we believe it really does work and suggest you give it a try… you will be very impressed with the results!
To get rid of yeast fungus in the body you need to re-establish a healthy supply of friendly bacteria. This can easily be accomplished by taking a good probiotic supplement and drinking organic apple cider vinegar every day. We suggest you don’t go for cheap probiotic supplements such as Yukult though. These products are full of processed milk and sugar (two things that yeast fungus actually thrive on) and instead, go with a reputable supplement that contains live acidophilus, bifidus, bulgaricus and casei cultures.
For apple cider vinegar, only buy brands that are 100% organic and still contain the “mother” apple (very important). Take 1-2 tablespoons in a glass of water 20 minutes before every meal. Also use ACV as a dressing to sprinkle over salads, etc, as much as you can for an extra supply.
Note: If you find that you really cant handle the taste of the ACV liquid then it's okay to take the tablets or capsules instead as these work equally as well.
