How Glucosamine and Apple Cider Vinegar Help With Arthritis...

QUESTION:

Hi, I'm following many of your recommendations for arthritis - ACV, magnesium spray, calcium, borax, baking soda, etc.... but I can't take Glucosamine. It gives me too many loose stools and even diarrhea. I used to buy Glucosomine HCL from AOR and it worked great, but they don't make it anymore. They only have Glucosamine sulfate. My guess is that it's the sulfate that bothers me. Do you have any suggestions?

I'm also taking ACV for my IBS, arthritis and acid reflux. When I told my doctor I was taking this remedy, she said if you have acid issues then why would you put more acid down your throat? A test that I took at the hospital showed that I have excess acid in my stomach and that I had a small hernia at the junction of the stomach and oesophegus. Can you explain how adding ACV with the acid it contains works to suppress my acid reflux?

Thank you for all the excellent info on your site. Many of your recommendations have also helped my mother with her gout. We are both thankful for this great source of information.

ANSWER:

Hi Francine. Firstly, thank you for your kind words. We really appreciate it and are glad our recommendations are helping.

Firstly with the glucosamine, you can still buy glucosamine HCL (hydrochloride) in other brands. The one we recommend is Schiff's glucosamine (it
really works well!). It also contains vitamin D and hyaluronic acid for extra benefit. From all reports, it's very easy on the stomach. Just make sure you take it straight after a meal. Never take it on an empty stomach as this can cause diarrhea. Here's what it looks like... Schiff Glucosamine with Vitamin D3 and Hyaluronic Acid Joint Supplement.

Now in regards to the acidity of the apple cider vinegar. Yes ACV is acidic, however, once it enters the body it changes and becomes alkaline! Your doctor should know this. This article explains more about ACV, how it works and some of its benefits... Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar. Only the raw, unaltered apple cider vinegar is alkaline-forming though. Processed ACV's (white, balsamic, red wine, etc) are acid forming. This is why only the raw organic unfiltered ACV should ever be consumed. Once the apple cider vinegar becomes alkaline in the gut it "normalizes" stomach acid production. The test you took showed excess stomach acid production because your gut is not working properly, so it's trying to compensate by producing more acid. The ACV will get the gut working correctly again. Just make sure you get plenty of probiotics into you as well for gut health. This is crucial for curing both your acid reflux and your arthritis.

So hopefully this answers your questions and helps you out Francine.

Good luck and all the best to you!

The use of Glucosamine sulphate
by: Paul

Hello Troy, I have taken this supplement for about 5 years now. I can vouch that it has almost completely eradicated the quite severe swelling and pain I used to get continually in one knee. Take just 1 pill per day. My question is... a Doctor suggested that it was wise to 'have a holiday' every year from this product, for a period of 2/3 months, to give the liver a rest. He added that this 'holiday' is better to have in the summer months. What do you think? As far as I am aware I'm not suffering with liver ailments. Thank you.

There were some "maybe's" hanging around a little while ago about glucosamine causing possible liver damage, but this has never been proven. In fact, according to this review... "Glucosamine link to liver damage is unlikely, says FSA -- Glucosamine is not likely to cause hepatitis, the FSA’s Committee on Toxicology (COT) has concluded after examining existing evidence – a review prompted by a small number of case studies suggesting a link." (1) I've been taking glucosamine for the last 7 years without a rest and have never suffered any ill effects. Having a rest for 3 months would actually do you more harm than good in my opinion. You'll have to contend with that sore knee again. I also take turmeric with fish oil and black pepper for joint pain. This works a treat, and the side benefit is turmeric is a powerful liver tonic!

Hope this helps.

All the best to you Paul! :)
